Ways to Get Involved

The Church functions as a Body when each member plays his or her part. These are just some of the ways that you can volunteer. If there’s something you’d like to do that’s not listed here, contact the Chaplain.

Welcome Team: Greet people each Sunday and hand out the service cards used in worship, take up the collection, direct people during Communion, set up and put away chairs, and generally clear up afterwards. Contact: James Dress.

Leading Prayers: Lead the congregation in intercessory prayers during the Sunday morning service. You can either create your own prayers or use set prayers provided, as you prefer. Contact: Josette Castet.

Reading: Read a previously chosen passage of Scripture during the Sunday morning service. Contact: Josette Castet.

Communion: Help prepare the elements and make sure stocks are full, and help to administer the chalice during the actual giving/receiving of Communion during the Sunday morning service. Contact: Rev Andrew Tweedy.

Music/Choir: Share your musical gifts and talents as part of the Music Group, who lead the congregation in worship each Sunday morning; also, be part of the choir that performs each year during St George’s Christmas carol service. Contact: Jenny Shaw.

Serving Coffee: Help pour coffee and tea after the service, and do a bit of washing up. Contact: Janet Webster or sign up on the church noticeboard.

Sound System & PowerPoint: Computer-literate people needed to be part of the team that mikes the Chaplain, runs the sound board and cues the projection of songs during Sunday morning services. Contact: Andy Frankland.

Youth Work: Join the team that helps the next generation grow to maturity in Christ. Ages 3-13, contact: Denise Kent. Teens, contact: Billie Tweedy or Andy Frankland. University students and 20-somethings, contact: Caroline Cox.

Bookstall: Help to organize the stand of Christian books and other resources on sale after the service. Contact: Susie Flory.

Pastoral Care: Reach out to any in need, regardless of creed, faith or life situation, both in emotional or spiritual situations, as well as material ways – accompanying people to town hall, police station, social security office etc to apply for papers, or visiting the sick and elderly. Contact: Gwen Brown or Dorothy Prenafeta.

Prayer Chain: Be part of the chain gang – receive a prayer request and pass it on to the next link-person in the chain. Currently around a dozen people pray regularly for people who send in their requests, usually by email or phone. Contact: Janet Webster.

Events Committee: Plan, organize and promote a variety of social events that take place in the life of the church over the course of a year, from potluck lunches, seasonal events, sales, garden parties, BBQs, fundraisers and fairs. All ideas welcome! Contact: Louise Schubert.

Marketing: Use your creative skills in design, writing, photography, web or IT to spread the word about St George’s using modern communication techniques. Contact: Phil Seager.

Gardening: Spruce up the church garden on a seasonal basis and keep the grounds looking trim and tidy. Contact: Rev Andrew Tweedy.

Maintenance: How many St George’s members does it take to change a light bulb? Handy people always needed to do the odd job around the church or in the two upstairs flats, as required. Contact: Rev Andrew Tweedy.

Capital Improvements: Share your expertise and experience of project managing a major refurbishment or building project. Contact: Rev Andrew Tweedy.

Synod Rep: Represent St George’s at the annual meeting of our Diocesan area, which includes all the Chaplaincies of mainland Spain, Gibraltar, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Portugal, Madeira and Andorra. Requires someone able to take a week off once a year to attend. Venue changes annually. Contact: Rev Andrew Tweedy.
