Baptisms

Baptism or Christening: Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God that continues for the rest of our lives. It’s the first step in response to God’s love. For all involved, particularly the candidates but also parents, godparents and supporters, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring the Christian faith. The wider community of St George’s and friends welcome the new Christian, promising support and prayer for the future. Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be shared with this new member of the Church. For all these reasons, baptisms usually take place within one of our regular Sunday services, although separate ceremonies are possible.

Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child: The birth or adoption of a child is cause for celebration. Many people are overcome by a sense of awe at the creation of new life and want to express their thanks to God. This service provides an opportunity for parents and families to give thanks for the birth or adoption of a child and to pray for family life. It can be a separate ceremony but usually takes place as part of a regular Sunday service. It is not the same as baptism, which is the sacrament of initiation into membership of the Church.

Please note: For services of Baptism/Christening or Thanksgiving, no fees are payable. However, St George’s is an entirely self-financing church and donations are always welcome.

For further details or to book one of these services, please contact the Chaplain or church administrator.
