Sunday School
The purpose of St George’s Sunday School is to help children learn about Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit through the Bible and to discover God’s will for all of us. The children explore and discover through games, Bible stories, crafts, singing and praying.
Some of the teachers use the methods of Godly Play. Every year the children stage a Christmas presentation. The Chaplain also organizes separate classes to prepare children for Confirmation and First Communion.
How it works: The Sunday School programme runs regularly from October to June, and classes continue on a more flexible basis during July, August and September.
Everyone begins the service together for joint worship, and then the children leave the main service to attend their own groups as follows:
Under 3: parents take care of their own children in the lounge
3-4 year olds: Bubbles group led by Judith/Monica
5-7 year olds: Splash group led by Claire/Sue
8-10 year olds: Xstream group led by Denise/Susanna
11-13 year olds: Grid group led by Caroline/Kiki/Ed
What about Communion? On the days when there is Holy Communion, the teachers are signaled when to bring the children back down to be with their parents either to receive a blessing or Communion, if they are confirmed.
Is there Sunday School every week? There is an All Age service held once a month in which everyone stays and worships together. No Sunday School classes are held on those Sundays. See Service Times.
What happens after church? After the service, the children are free to play in the classrooms, on the landing where there is ping-pong and table football, or outside in the garden. However, parents are responsible for their own children after the service. We would especially like parents of children ages 4 and under to collect their children promptly.
Where are the materials from? All the teaching materials are Bible-based lessons and activities produced by Scripture Union. SU resources are suitable for all Christian denominations and are used around the world by Anglicans, Baptists, Brethren, Methodists, Presbyterians, Salvation Army, United Reformed Churches, the Uniting Church of Australia and a wide range of other independent churches and fellowships.
Is my child safe? Every class has an assistant as well as a teacher, so there is never only one adult left alone with children. All children’s workers go through a careful vetting process in line with the Child Protection regulations of the Church of England.
